AAI deputes all-women team of employees

To commemorate the International Women's Day on the March 08 , 2018, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is operating Air Traffic Services with all-women ATCOs at NSCBI Airport Tower, Kolkata, in addition to other positions, from 0700 AM to 0100 PM. Communication Navigation Surveillance (CNS) wing will also deploy lady-officers in CNS units.

Women power will control all those flights which will land/take off during this period. There will be approximately 150 flights.

Air Traffic Control is one of the most challenging jobs that demands utmost alertness, promptness, high levels of concentration, skill, expertise and presence of mind. With an aim to maintain safe flight operation, the controllers have to keep RADAR identification of all aircrafts under their control, directing aircrafts to climb or descend and allocating final cruising levels, providing information to aircraft about adverse weather conditions, making sure minimum separation between two planes, handling unexpected events and emergency situations. They have to listen, see, think and speak at the same time involving high level of multi tasking.

"Every woman that finally figured out her worth, has picked up her suitcases of pride and boarded a flight to freedom, which landed in the valley of change."

Shannon L. Alder

At Present 41 women Air Traffic Controllers, including Training In-charge, ATC Instructors, Radar Controllers and as many women CNS maintenance executives are working and looking after the challenging job of providing Air Navigation Services and ensuring safety of Aircraft operations at NSCBI Airport. Thus women have made inroads and proved themselves to the male dominated ATC work field a decade earlier.

On the eve of International Women's Day, Regional Executive Director (Eastern Region), Mr K.L. Sharma, said that women employees at AAI have showcased their skills in ATC, CNS and other Departments, and we are providing them best practices in aviation along with zero-tolerance towards harassment of women at workplace.
