NEWDELHI, JANUARY 28: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is scheduled to get a swanky New Integrated Terminal Building by 2021. The Foundation Stone for the New Integrated Terminal Building, which will be built at a cost or Rs 1, 232 crore, was laid by Mr. P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Union Minister for Civil Aviation and Mr. Sarbanada Sonowal, Chief Minister, Assam on January 28, 2018 in the presence of Mr. Chandra Mohan Patowary, Minister of Commerce & Industry, Transport and Parliamentary Affairs, Govt of Assam and Mr Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Member of Legislative Assembly (Guwahati West), Assam and senior officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The new terminal building will conform to GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) 4-Star rating. The city side of the building will be aesthetically landscaped with lush green areas. It will have green areas within and outside connecting passengers to nature. A small internal forest feature, bamboo artifact and a craft village are integrated into the overall design, highlighting the rich ethos and culture of the Northeastern region of India.

An efficient solid waste management system, reuse of treated water for flushing and horticulture purpose, rain-water harvesting with sustainable urban drainage system and use of efficient water fixtures would be a few other green features of the project.

The new integrated terminal building will have 64 check-in counters, 20 self-check-in kiosks, eight immigration counters, eight custom counters, six arrival carousels, 10 escalators, one travellator, 25 elevators, 16 self-baggage drop counters and 20 aircraft parking bays among others.

While addressing the audience during the Bhoomi Poojan ceremony, Hon'ble Union Minister for Civil Aviation Mr P Ashok Gajapathi Raju highlighted the importance of an airport in achieving development of a region and a state. He also emphasized on the cooperation needed between state governments and the Centre for developing civil aviation infrastructure. He mentioned that the present government, for the first time in the history of Indian Civil Aviation since Independence, has formulated a National Civil Aviation Policy to connect small cities and to use the available airstrips across the country. Commenting on the upcoming integrated terminal building, to be ready by 2020-2021, he said that the new building is going to comply with all prevalent green-features and will help cater to the expanding air traffic from the region.cite>

On the airport project being handled by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) Mr Sarbanada Sonowal, Chief Minister, Assam said, "Guwahati, the largest city of Assam and North East of India, and one of the fastest growing cities in India is on its way to transform into a Smart City. Today is an important day for Guwahati and Assam. The new airport being constructed by AAI will surely meet the futuristic demands of Guwahati and will further add to the infrastructural development of this expanding city."
